Simple before clever
We choose the simplest design that meets the requirement. Clever code is expensive to read, test and change.
About HummingByte
We are a software engineering company based in Enugu, Nigeria. We build and run web, mobile, backend and cloud systems for organisations that need them to work reliably, and we collaborate with clients across time zones.
01 · Who we are
HummingByte exists to build software properly. Our clients come to us when they need a product built from scratch, an existing system made faster or safer, or infrastructure that stops waking people up at night.
We are engineers by background and by habit. We ask about users, data, load, failure modes and budgets before we talk about features, because those are the things that decide whether software succeeds. We then design, build, test, deploy and document the result with the same care.
Our name comes from the hummingbird: small, precise and remarkably efficient. That is how we like to work. Focused teams, clear priorities and no wasted motion.
02 · Mission
Our mission is to give every client software they can build a business on: well engineered, clearly documented and supported for the long run.
We are proud to be part of Africa’s growing technology ecosystem, and we hold our work to the standard expected of any engineering team in the world. Where we are based should never limit the quality of what we deliver.
03 · Engineering philosophy
These are not slogans. They shape how we estimate, design, review and ship every piece of work.
We choose the simplest design that meets the requirement. Clever code is expensive to read, test and change.
Mature, well-supported technology for the parts that must not fail. We experiment where the risk is low.
A feature is not finished until it is covered by tests that run automatically on every change.
Builds, checks and deployments are scripted and repeatable, so releasing is routine rather than risky.
We profile before optimising and monitor after launch, so decisions are based on evidence.
Decisions, architecture and operating procedures are documented for the people who come after us.
04 · Working with us
Good client relationships are built on clarity. From the first call you will know who is responsible, what is happening this week and what trade-offs are on the table.
Your main contact understands the code and the plan, and can answer technical questions directly.
You see working software at the end of every iteration, with a short summary of progress and risks.
We work in your repositories and project board where possible, so nothing is hidden and nothing is locked in.
If something will take longer or cost more than expected, you hear it early, with options.
05 · Capabilities
Our practice areas cover the full path from interface to infrastructure. Each links through to detailed service pages.
01
Products your users touch: apps, websites, APIs and the systems behind them.
02
The data, cloud and operational foundations that keep software running.
03
Independent review, guidance and hands-on help for existing systems.
04
Turning data into reporting, automation and carefully scoped AI prototypes.
06 · Professional standards
Whether the engagement is a two-week audit or a year-long product build, the same standards apply.
07 · Global delivery
We work remotely with clients in Nigeria, across Africa and further afield. Distance is managed with process, not promises.
West Africa Time (UTC+1) overlaps comfortably with business hours across Africa and Europe. For clients further away, we agree a daily overlap window and rely on written updates, recorded demos and asynchronous code review so work keeps moving between calls.
All engagements are run in English, with contracts, invoices and documentation prepared for international clients. Where on-site workshops would help, we discuss options case by case.
